Mixing High and Low

“I was fascinated by magazines. I scribbled, drew shoes, picked clothes out for my mom. She really encouraged me. She bought me my first sewing machine and she’d bring home fresh flowers and say, ‘Draw something for me.’ I’ve always had a very supportive family. There are all these sorts of stereotypes that certain backgrounds – Asian families – want to direct you into certain [careers] but my family has always been, ‘This is where your talent is, let’s go for it.’ And with that I’ve been very lucky.”

Resort Collection 2012
A peek at Resort 2012 shows us that resort fashion this year is broken up into three catagories: stark whites, bold colors reminiscent of fall, or a combination of the two using a pattern or color blocking (which is very prominent for Spring/Summer 2011 thanks to Prada.) Whites, blacks, and orangers predominate with splashes of yellow, pink, red, and blue.

” I’d like to believe that the women who wear my clothes are not dressing for other people, that they’re wearing what they like and what suits them. It’s not a status thing.” - Marc Jacobs

“I often wonder, sometimes I think the people who buy our clothes live in a parallel universe. Hell, we can’t even afford our clothes.”
-Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler tells Grazia magazine what he thinks of their customers. They are collaborating with Target for an afforable line.
Love the dress

Jessica Chastain wore a gorgeous modern colored dress with vintage lines to the premier of her film “Tree of Life” starring Brad Pitt.
Men’s fashion pop up shop: NYC’s blackout/soccer inspired

In 1977, NYC had a blackout that few could forget. Looting, riots, burning, and chaos. It also happens to be the day that Brazilian soccer player Carlos Alberto Torres flew into NYC with the New York Cosmos, a popular team at the time.
To commemorate the mayhem, Umbro is launching a special collection called “Cosmos for a Blackout.” The items will be sold in a pop up shop in the lower East Side’s Reed Space. On opening night, the store celebrated the opening with a brick thrown through the window.
Torres, who will be in town for the brick-bashing opening, to ask what he most remembered from that dark day. “No showers! I got to my hotel and had to sit in the lobby — it wasn’t until late that evening I could finally get into my room after a long day traveling,” he said with a laugh. But the night life clearly made up for it: “Man we used to go to Studio 54 one night and hear Frank Sinatra at Carnegie Hall the next.”

What I love about this photo is the traditional style of the European man. Jacket, creased trousers, and the ever ubiquitous scarf. Add to that the allure of an adorable bicycle and you have yourself a fashionable man. This particular style is making a huge comeback this season, with the difference now being shorter length pants (suit shorts are apparantly all the rage) and slightly more tailored lines.
